I had the honour of modelling Samantha Kim Sayers‘ collection for the Foschini Design Awards, photographed by the talented Megan Davies. I was so inspired by Samantha’s work that I just had to blog about it!
The looks I modelled were for phase three of the Foshini Design Awards. The competition started off with a brief to design one commercial look and one high fashion look. Fedisa entered 18 shortlisted students into the competition. And Samantha received a phone call informing her that she was one on the eight semi-finalists! The next brief was to create an on trend, high fashion stand out look. She was given three months and R1500 to work on it.
Samantha was stunned when she found out she made it into the final round. She said “I couldn’t believe it – I didn’t even think I would make it past the first round of submissions!” The brief called for three ready-to-wear outfits inspired by current seasonal trends and colours. She was given six meters of grey ribbon fabric, R1500 for additional fabrics, R1500 Foschini gift cards to style each look and only one month to complete her collection. I thought her collection was absolutely breathtaking.
My inspiration for the final brief came from the Nocturn trend. This trend embraces the dark and says bring on the night. More people are becoming active at night and experiencing down-time during the day. The beading resembles the city lights and the reflective tape brings to mind the twinkling sky. I combined elements from active wear with casual leisure wear. I hope that this will encourage people to take on a new nocturnal lifestyle.
