The Hungry Herbivore

What do you do when your cheat day is still three days away, but you are craving cheesecake? I assume some of you would fight the cravings (well done), but most of us just can’t seem to resist the temptation. I’m one of those people who can’t. I spent the whole week in bed, so my willpower was at an all time low.

So today I ate cake. A delicious salted caramel cheesecake and on top of that I enjoyed peppermint tart AND chocolate milk. The best part? All of it was 100% vegan, raw and guilt free thanks to The Hungry Herbivore.

I discovered this magical place by accident one day. I was at the V&A Waterfront Food Market and the name caught my eye. The lady explained to me that all the food was vegan and raw. I’m not vegan (I’m more of a carnivore), but a little voice in my head convinced me to just give it a try and it was the best decision of my life.

The Hungry Herbivore is a small artisanal plant-based food bar that specialises in raw pizza and vegan dessert. They also stock some other yummy treats,  my personal favourite being the almond milk from The Almond Creamery. The Hungry Herbivore also caters events. I used their services in September last year. I ordered bite-sized mint chocolate slices and I only got positive feedback. All of my friends enjoyed it (even those that swore they would never eat anything raw).

Unlike some vegan restaurants, The Hungry Herbivore’s prices are very affordable. Their mint chocolate slice and salted caramel bar is only R20 and pizzas are R30 a slice. For more prices and menu items, have a look at their website here.

This place is one of Cape Town’s gems. If you are a foodie, vegan, health fanatic or just want to experiment I would recommend you try it. It’s pretty hard to believe that something is guilt free, when it tastes this good. Give them a follow on Instagram here.

Sea you soon xoxo
